Magenta Theater Debuts New Children’s Theater Program
Sleeping Beauty, Saturday, August 10, 2pm
Sleeping Beauty (with a twist) is an interactive short comedy for young audiences. This beloved fairy tale has a traditional storyteller reading from his all too well-known book of Sleeping Beauty but is quickly usurped by the story’s feisty villain, the evil Griselda. With a magical spell, she literally turns back the hands of time to show what really happened to Sleeping Betty. Fortunately two good fairies and a magical frog help set the story straight, and make sure everyone lives happily ever after.
The play runs just under an hour so the youngsters won’t get too wiggly. Magenta Theater, located at 1108 Main Street in downtown Vancouver, has a brand new children’s theater program – MAGENTOTS! But this is not kids performing! This is ‘adult actors performing FOR kids’. Magentots productions will be best enjoyed by children aged 4-10 but all ages are welcome. Babies 9 months and under are admitted free of charge. All other attendees need a ticket.
Sleeping Beauty director Lauren Scher says, “I’ve been hoping for years to bring live theater to Magenta for the kids! When I approached Artistic Director, Jaynie Roberts, she was cautious about adding yet another program to the company’s already full schedule. But even she got caught up in the potential magic, and auditioned for the first production! There will be two shows this year, and hopefully six in 2020.”
Audience members will have the opportunity to win OMSI passes good for two adults and two children, valued at $49. You just have to be in the audience to potentially win!
Vancouver has multiple outlets where youth can act and perform…and Magenta certainly doesn’t want to try and encroach into that already well-covered field. Instead…..Magenta wants to provide a place in VANCOUVER where parents and grandparents can bring the kids for some live theater. And not have to cross the bridge into Portland! Artistic Director, Jaynie Roberts, says, “Magentots will initially offer one performance of each production but will add a second performance if ticket sales warrant. Eventually the performances will be taken into the community for additional enjoyment. We are open to clever suggestions as to how we might introduce all youngsters to live theater in our community. After all, they are the future of community theater!”
