Contra in the Couve
December 13 @ 7:30 pm UTC-7
An event every month that begins at 7:30 pm on day Second of the month, repeating until December 13, 2019
Come contra dance with us the second Friday of every month with live music and professional callers! Find out who this month’s band and caller is by visiting our website.
What’s a contra dance, you ask? Contra dancing is an American social dance tradition dating back to the colonial period. It’s fun, interactive, easy to learn, great exercise, and has nothing to do with Nicaragua. Some say that if you can walk, you can contra dance, because there is no fancy footwork involved. Contra dance is not country line dancing, nor is it square dancing, though we may occasionally dance a square. Contra is square’s Yankee cousin and, like square dancing, is always prompted by a caller. So, if you’ve ever done square dancing, contra will seem familiar to you—but no fancy outfit is required!
Learn how to contra dance with a free lesson at 7:30 p.m, followed by the dance from 8 to 10:30 p.m. No experience necessary (two left feet welcome!). Come with friends or alone. Dress comfortably and bring a water bottle (leather-soled shoes are best with low or no heels).
Admission is $6 – $15 (sliding scale) at the door. Please pay what you can afford. Proceeds help cover our costs for running the dance. This event is kid friendly and alcohol free.
