Week 2: Castle Rock at Washougal, 7 p.m.

The Panthers scored 44 points in the first quarter. Yes. The. First. Quarter. That is what one would call a good start to the season for Washougal.

After the first quarter of play, it’s what score again?

Just got to watch the video from this one. That first quarter was simply mesmerizing.

Yes, West Seattle is down this season, but it is not like this was a bad scheduling move when the two schools decided to set a home-and-home series. Last year, West Seattle beat Washougal.

Here is how the Panthers got to 44 points in just 12 minutes of football.

West Seattle gets sacked (couldn’t see the number on video), fumbled, and Ian Harris picked it up and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown. 7-0.

Nathan Tofell intercepts a pass, setting up another touchdown. 14-0.

West Seattle tries to punt. Bad snap. Washougal sets up inside 10-yard-line and scores soon after to make it 21-0.

Nick Oakes applied the initial pressure but the West Seattle quarterback slipped away from him. Yet, the QB had no place to go, then turned around right into the arms of Oakes for a sack. Then on fourth down, Jakob Davis got a sack, setting up another short field for another Washougal touchdown, 28-0.

Davis was not done. On the next West Seattle series, he sacked the quarterback in the end zone for a safety. 30-0.

Washougal’s offense would score after the free kick to make it 37-0.

West Seattle went for it on fourth down again, but there was confusion in the backfield. That led to an easy tackle-for-loss for Cole Robb, and the Panthers offense would come back on the field and score the next play. 44-0.

“It was tough to learn much,” he said, noting the lopsided score. “We were able to come out, ready to play. Our kids want to be good, and they proved that. They were very serious on the way up. We were ready to take care of business.”

Coach’s pick for MVP on offense: Kade Coons. In a quarter of action, he had 111 yards rushing with three touchdowns.

Coach’s pick for MVP on defense: Ian Harris. Had that fumble return for a touchdown plus two sacks.

Thoughts on Week 2: “Castle Rock. Even though they lost last week, in the past they have been a very physical team,’’ Hajek said. “They gave us problems last year. They beat us. We’ve warned the kids. They beat us last year because they were more physical. Kind of an insult to lose to a team because they beat you up. It’s on us to be more physical.”
