Spudders claim third-place trophy at state volleyball

Prairie also takes home trophy from state

The Ridgefield Spudders completed a successful postseason run with a third-place finish at the Class 2A state volleyball tournament in Lacey this weekend.

Ridgefield, which finished second in the 2A Greater St. Helens League standings, roared to life in November with a District 4 championship and then won its first two matches at state to reach the semifinals.

The Spudders fell to Lynden in the semifinals but bounced back to top White River to take home the third-place trophy. Ridgefield lost the first set to White River, but rallied to win the second set 30-28, fueling the momentum for a 3-1 victory.

At the 3A tournament in Kennewick, 3A GSHL champion Prairie took fifth, bettering the program’s finish from last season when the Falcons ended up in seventh place.

Prairie won its opening round match before falling in the quarterfinals. From there, the Falcons beat Stanwood and Ferndale in straight sets for the fifth-place trophy.

La Center lost its first-round match at the 1A tournament in Yakima. The Wildcats rebounded to win one in the consolation bracket but then were knocked out in the next match, finished state with a 1-2 record.

Firm Foundation did not win a match in the 2B state tournament, also in Yakima. Still, it was a successful 2017 as the program reached the state tournament for the first time.
