La Center’s Grotte shines at state swim meet

Wildcats and Columbia River share big moments in the pool

The La Center swim team is relatively new and does not have a whole lot of swimmers.

But those La Center swimmers are really fast.

Hailey Grotte finished second in two events at the Class 2A state girls swimming and diving championships Saturday at the King County Aquatics Center. Teammate Bryanna Ungs placed in two events.

The Wildcats were the only swimmers from Clark County in all classifications to place in the top eight in two individual events. (La Center is a Class 1A school, but competes in the 2A meet because there is no meet specifically for 1A or smaller schools.)

Also, Clark County can claim that the 50-yard freestyle is kind of its thing. Grotte finished second, Ungs took fifth, and Columbia River’s Makena Wilcox finished seventh in the event.

Grotte also finished second in the 100 freestyle.

Kara Noftsker of Columbia River finished third in the 200 free. She also helped the team’s 200-freestyle relay team to a sixth place finish. Elizabeth Lujano, Wilcox, Sarah Ellis, and Noftsker combined for that result.

Columbia River had the best team finish among Clark County squads. The Chieftains finished 12th in the 2A meet.

In the 4A meet, Jacqueline Purwins of Camas finished seventh in diving.
