Vancouver officer who rescued children from armed intruder gets national honor

Officer Edward Letarte will receive the Honorable Mention Award from the National Association of Police Organizations

VANCOUVER — Vancouver Police Department officer Edward Letarte has received national recognition for his involvement in an incident in which four children and an adult were rescued from an armed intruder on Feb. 10, 2017, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

Letarte on Monday received the Honorable Mention Award from the National Association of Police Organizations in Washington, D.C., at the 25th annual TOP COPS Awards Dinner.

“The purpose of the TOP COPS Awards is to educate the American public about our nation’s heroes and to pay tribute to law enforcement officers in federal, state, county, tribal and local agencies from across the country for actions above and beyond the call of duty during the preceding year,” according to a press release from the police department.

Officer Letarte was previously awarded the Vancouver Police Department Medal of Valor at the department’s annual award ceremony in March 2018 for his actions during the same incident.
