VANCOUVER — The first disc golf course in a Clark County park could open in 2018 on a 40-acre parcel at Hockinson Meadows Community Park.

On Nov. 22, the Board of Clark County Councilors approved plans to build an 18-hole course in the park at Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast 119th Street.

About 70 acres of the 240-acre park have been developed and offer ball fields, walking trails, an off-leash dog park and other amenities.

Clark County currently leases the the future disc golf course for agriculture use. The county intends to terminate that lease so the site can be used for recreational purposes.

The project will require engineering, design and permitting work, including pinpointing environmentally sensitive areas within the 40 acres. The work is expected to take a year or longer, which means the course could open in mid-2018.

The project is expected to cost approximately $70,500. The county will use $65,000 from park impact fees collected in residential construction. The remaining $5,500 is expected to come from donations. Several donations already have been made to the Parks Foundation of Clark County to help develop and maintain disc golf courses on county property.

Disc golf is one of the fastest-growing recreational sports in the United States. The county heard significant support for the sport when it updated its Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan in 2015. The Clark County Parks Advisory Board unanimously voted to support this project earlier this year.

Four disc golf courses exist in Clark County, but none of them have 18 holes. The most popular venue, a 12-hole course at Leverich Community Park in Vancouver, can attract more than 100 players a day.
